I have been asked many times from people in my husbands unit to other soldiers families. So I complied a list of our up coming travels and costs. Also how we come up with places to go.
In June we are doing Amsterdam again with a group of friends. For Amsterdam I always use priceline. I check central area and five star. I always do between 40 and 50 night. I have never had it rejected. We ended at NH Palace Barbizon the first time we went.
For in Germany, Czech and Poland. I use homeaway.com and booking.com I have gotten amazing deals. For almost a week in Czech we are paying 117 a family. We are going with friends. Poland we are going for 2 nights at 50 dollars a night. I always set our prices to American dollars.
These are my go to sites for sleeping arrangements. I always make sure for free parking. I also always want private bathrooms. I also make sure breakfast is included or there is a spot for cooking. I try and cut costs that way. When we got to Czech we will enjoy some of local foods but also cut costs by cooking at the bungalow. Poland we have breakfast included along with a taste of Poland on our second night. Can’t wait for that.
For Things to do and see I have a lot of sources. Our garrison puts out a things to do list. I also love Rick Steves. I have all his guide books for the areas we have visited. He has episodes on hulu you can watch. If you can’t get hulu to work overseas all you have to do is get a vpn service. The one we use is 5.00 a month. I also love the Frommer’s guide. There is also a guide that we pick up seasonally at the px or the shoppette.
After we decide on things that we want to do. I research it online and in the books to see how I was going to get the best deal. I find that it cheaper to travel during the week than on the weekend. Make a plan and follow it. We are doing a lot of traveling this year with great friends and that cuts your expenses. you are able to make your funds go further.
We also tend to use our training holidays for travel. Saves our leave time. I want to have enough days for when we go stateside to spend as much time with my family (Paul’s too)as we can. we also try and do a lot of our travel on off season as well. It tends to be cheaper.
Hope this helps some of you.
