Yesterday we had the pleasure of having the USO Tour of Sesame Street here. They were great. Blake gave us a bunch of heck about having to go to the baby show. In the end he realized his Mom was right again. He walked away with the knowledge that it is ok to make new friends but also that sometimes you get scared to move somewhere new. He has heard the term PCS a lot lately. He also has been missing his old friends.
I really loved this since it was based on moving and friends.Katie whose dad is active military as well. She talks about how she is nervous to be moving again. Also having to make new friends. I know Blake and Nathan both have struggled with this. Blake made 1 friend last school year and he is now in Florida while his mom is deployed. He now wants to write more to his old friends. Thank you Katie! I know he is nervous about school starting up. Nathan is just shy to begin with. He doesn’t self advocate very well. Katie showed them that it was ok to do so. It really opened up the discussions for us at home. Why its Ok to be the first to say hi. If you say a simple Hi and they will respond. It is a good way to start your conversation. I know this also worked as a confidence builder for them.
Both boys really enjoyed the show. For us not only was it another part of home coming to visit but to know they weren’t alone in feeling what they do. I can’t imagine having to move every three years. Its an adventure for sure. I am sure it has been taxing on them. Scary. Things we didn’t think about as parents. When we left we received a Talk, Listen and Connect kit. It has great material in it to help your children open up about what they are thinking. I know us as parents sometimes need that. I think every family who is military and just starting or veteran should attend this show. It is a bit over 30 minutes long and worth every minute. My kids laughed and laughed. We watched a friends son not know what to think of Cookie Monster touching his head.
It was a great day out. Here are some Shots.
A very big and heartfelt THANK YOU. I know our family and others appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to visit ours and the other bases.
