There are new Stats in and they are scary. Why are they scary? I will tell you there is not enough funding. Without funding families are struggling. 1 ot/sensory visits for Paul and I to send one kid to for 2.5 hours 500. A weighted vest cost us an arm and leg. It is not cheap to raise two boys with autism. Yes we get ssi benefits and Medicaid. Does it cover everything NO. My ssi is determined by how much my husbands makes a month. Not fair. We have to chose between rent payments and therapies. Luckily the school here now provides these services. We drained ourselves in CT with these payments. The government needs to put in just as much funding as they do for cancer and other research programs. This is something that drives me nuts!I am passionate about because we love it. We do lot with our kids to expose them and not keep them locked in a house. It socialize them to help the areas where they are weak. They need to help take some of this burden off the parents.
My days are long and hard. Most parents cant work because the minute you mention the diagnosis of autism they say they cant handle it. I am tested daily on my own strength to ignore the stares of onlookers when my child melts down because someone touched them. I get they are spoiled. My children aren’t spoiled, they melt down because they don’t understand. I choose not live within these four walls. Tantrums are long and hard. Often leave me crying with them. We have lost friends because of this. When people ask why the behave the way the do, and i reply due to autism. The next question is oh they are rain man? No! My oldest has Aspergers that is like rain man but he is not nearly as bad. There needs to be so much more awareness made for the public understanding. 1 in every 110 children will be affected by this disease. This number is astounding and should raise some RED flags with the public health departments.
I am asking you to go to Autism Speaks and educate yourself. Then write your legislative members to get them to wake up to this new health epidemic. Here is the new press release. Read it. I agree with knowledge is your power. Next time you see a mom with screaming kids, don’t gawk at her stop and ask her if you can help. I cant even tell you how lonely this walk is most days.
So please go inform yourself on this disease.
